I HAVE A SINGULARITY IN MY PANTS

The new Star Trek movie made me feel like I was the one standing where Tucker is in this photo. I could have used more old school Romulan Empire stuff, but I knew that wasn't in the cards. I'm looking forward to more of these films (inevitable now), and can't wait to see what they'll do with the Klinks (very likely antagonists).

I've heard nothing but good shit about this film, so I cannot wait to see it - on the big screen, no less, not on my sad home set-up. And that should show how excited I am to see this movie, because I believe 'Sweeney Todd' was the last movie I saw in a theater, when my sis-in-law was in town for Xmas.

Being an old school classic Star Trek nerd, I have to say it was incredible. You could make me watch it again sitting on a chair with nails for a cushion and I would endure the pain. And yes, engineering troll.

I actually hate just about all things Star Trek, but this movie was fucking awesome. I'm probably going to see it again sometime in the near future.

How can you hate on Star Trek?!? The old, campy stuff is fun...in it's own way. Ok, well...you can hate on Data. That's OK. Heh.

I only had one major problem with the film - and it's a really nit-picky visual thing. But I'm not going to bring it up until I'm sure that everyone's had their chance to see the flick.

PS - Ryan Church - Star Wars (among many other films) concept artist - was given permission to release his concept of the Enterprise. Check it here:

I'm a wee little guy, so I missed the original and wasn't old enough to pay any real attention to the Next Generation. I watched most of Deep Space Nine however. The ending totally ruined most things Trek related for me. What a total shitbomb let down. So that was the last show I watched even though I watched all the movies they released.

This one being the best movie they have done in my opinion.

ChiTy - I'm so sorry your only Trek experience is Deep Space Nine. Terrible show. Ty and I only speak of the space battle near the very end of the series. Only good part.

This movie puts all the other films to shame. At least that's how I see it. I'm very glad for a Star Trek reboot.

There is a better chance of me showing up to Games Day 09 then ever seeing this pile of shite (no offense Lobot)

Unknown said...

Yet you sat through all of DUNE. And probably on more than one occasion!

Chris Horse said...

I go through ALL the trouble of putting both you (Murph) and Ty on the fucking free list for GD 09 and neither of you bastards show up!

So I can presume you actually went and saw star trek.

Ack Ack Ack said...

Blame Murph!

Besides, it was just too nice a day to pass up. The garden needed some love.

Murphy said...

Totally my fault, I was boozin til 4:30am...again.

Dune is indeed crucial I have seen it well over 20 times. I will never watch Star Trek unless Ricardo Montabaum's ghost puts creatures in my ears...

Murphy is king of the saddos!

Unknown said...

DUNE is indeed crucial. I have also sadly seen it way too many times. However, the new ST movie is also crucial. NOT seeing it on the big screen will make you a saddo!

The shit Wolverine film made 13M more than Trek's opening weekend. Get ready for more Wolverine.

Unknown said...

That's sad, but predictable. Wolverine is more accessible to the masses a this point.

We know which film is better though, don't we Ty.

NERDS!

You're a nerd by association. Hah!

(Who hasn't seen the movie yet? I want to discuss it in nity-gritty detail...)

Chris Horse said...

I have not seen this movie yet.

So don't fuck it up for me.

Unknown said...

I wouldn't do that to you. That why I asked you big dummy!

At the end of the movie, Khan's gnarled hand erupts out of the dirt of the Genesis planet and pulls a miniature NCC 1701 down into its depths all while quoting Melville.

Unknown said...

Hahahahahaha. Best ending EVAR!

Chris Horse said...

Stop lying. You never saw the ending, you were too busy making out with Murphy in the back row.

Unknown said...

You forget Chris...Murph is too good for Star Trek.

TYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY said...

Wait, I the ending I saw had Spock taking it up the ass from Kirk.

Then the hand of Khan shoved the NCC 1701 up Kirks ass.

That's the ending I saw anyways.

TYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY said...

Oh yea, I forgot.

I remember Jake telling me the story of how you two lovers went on a hunt for hours to find a copy of Ice Pirates. I've yet to see it however. It's been on my terrible (awesome) movie list for more than a few years. Time to get on that...

Ack Ack Ack said...

Like most things, the build-up was way more fun that the payoff. You can find Ice Pirates in any 3 dollar bin, easy.

Murphy said...

Indeed, indeed I am.

Fuck a Star Trek...

Unknown said...

Hahaha!

Chris Horse said...

OK.

Saw it.

Not bad. +1 for a unique way to reboot a cherished franchise.

The biggest gripe would be getting just about everything thing about black holes UTTERLY FUCKING WRONG. Which wouldn't be too bad if they weren't so damn important to the plot.

Yes, it is sci-fi - but it's sci-fi about SCIENCE and SPACE. You'd think they'd try to get those two things right.

At least he attempted to make his shots IN outer space quiet. Kudos for that.

(Attention: Spoilers! Hopefully everyone who wanted to see it has seen the movie at this point. If you haven't, don't read any further.)Just saw it again for a second time with Nat. It's very possible that I enjoyed it even more than the first viewing. I got to nerd out and try to catch the other style Federation vessels parked around the station and when then go to warp towards Vulcan. There are some really odd hulls that make my pants tighter. And I still get chills when I hear the thunderclap sound of them all going to warp. Hot stuff. (I'm a nerd for the Star Trek, although I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a "Trekkie." Haven't dressed up like a Klingon at any point in my life. Ty and I do command star ships in our free time though. We're pathetic.)

Chris: but these are black holes with Spock's "red matter." Maybe they're different - dropping matter from one universe into another and not just destroying it. And correct me if I, and Wikipedia, are wrong, but matter goes in and doesn't come out. But no one knows WHERE that matter goes yet, since no one has actually had the opportunity to enter a singularity.

Thinking on that line of though, our antagonist Nero may still be alive in yet another universe and could possibly come back, that is...if he survived his ship exploding from the Enterprises final onslaught and future Spock's "jellyfish" ship. But he's kinda messed up in the brain, so we have to assume that he just went down with his ship...enraged to the max.

Anyway, back to the film. You're right Chris. He did try to get the whole silent void thing right. When people where shot out of a decompressed Kelvin - a few good examples there. It wasn't completely followed through everywhere though. The Enterprise made a good deal of Enterprisey noises in space. At bit of a back and forth - but noises sometimes equal excitement. Battlestar Galactica handled it very well - but at the end, even they fudged a little. There was a lot of exploding sounds when Galactica was going toe-to-toe with that massive basestar near the end of the series.

I can let these things slide though, because I really WANT to hear those classic Star Trek sounds. It's just fun. I like having fun at movies - that's the point right?

Now, if you want to read a TRUE NERD'S rant (and a profound inability to accept change) you should check out this site:

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/inconsistencies/inconsistencies-trekxi.htm

The first time I saw the film, the "main engineering" area of the Enterprise (and the Kelvin) was a little shocking. Wasn't expecting tubes and I-beams everywhere. But, I mulled it over and ended up liking it - made the ship feel like a ship. Structural supports everywhere, not something you'd really notice in Kirk's cabin, but you definitely would in a massive space such as a cargo or shuttle bay or a cavernous engineering section of a ship. Since the ship is run by both warp drive (matter and anti-matter mixing to bend space) and nuclear-ionic impulse drives (the red rectangular things on the rear of the saucer section of the ship that make it move when it's not traveling at warp), it makes perfect sense to have a small nuclear power plant aboard the ship - hence all the water pipes and coolant towers. I originally felt bummed because Scotty didn't have one place to hang and call home, but seeing it a second time...dude's got a huge playground.

It's a great movie. It's exactly what the franchise needed. A good kick in the pants. I have hope for the second and possibly many others. As long as the writers keep up their side of the bargain and keep the characters fresh, we should be in for a treat. I even have hope for a TV show, but I think they would be hard pressed to get the actors to back track and do anything but big screen stuff from here on out. But here's hoping.

To Rick: Too right - it is possible that the singularity works differently given the red matter.

Barring that, getting pulled into a singularity usually means your atoms ripped apart 1 by 1 and re compressed due to the extreme gravitational forces.

A black whole really isn't a whole that you can fly through.

Now that's up with Captain Pike.
A) He's fine and they decided to skip a bunch of story.
B) There's a slug still in his head and in Star Trek pt2. X will happen.

"Dammit Chris, I'm an artist...not an astrophysicist!"

Heh.

Spoilers!Yeah, I'm totally not sure how a black hole works, but since Spock's black hole (ahem) didn't crush him or Nero's ship down to nothingness I'm assuming it works differently. Yet, it crushes planets just fine. Odd. Maybe Vulcan exists right next to another Vulcan in a different dimension.

It's possible that Pike is partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair since the doctors may have had trouble detaching the space-earwig from his spine. At least he doesn't have to answer questions with beeps. The end sequence of the movie would have been a little more awkward.

Kirk: "I relieve you of duty."
Pike: "beeeeeep."
