BEFORE THE CREAM SITS OUT TOO LONG...

Devo visited DC and the 9:30 Club last night. It was rather sick. Devo is one of the many little subconscious things that came together to shape my personality since I was a wee one. Again, this is solidly Dad's fault, whether he realizes it or not. There's only so many Devo videos you can park a young kid in front of during dinner without some collateral damage setting in. (we'll not get into the issues Rolly Polly Fish Heads brought about)

I bought tickets way early and was looking forward to seeing them in general as well as the chance to see 'em play Freedom Of Choice in its entirety. I had seen live show clips here and there and a full concert from back in the day (1980) and was always impressed with the sound quality and effort they put into their live set.Since it was a "we're gonna play this album" type of show, the set-list was pretty known. And that list has Mr B's Ballroom, Gates Of Steel, and Whip It in it. Some of my favorites. The encore songs would be the only wild card.
Well, despite being a thousand years old and in the biz for 30 years, Devo still does an impressive live performance. And for the encore, they fired up Be Stiff. I was way stoked as that song is so rad. After the encore, the house music came on, the roadies came out, and the lights went up, but the Spuds wouldn't leave, so Devo came back out. They made the roadies plug their shit back in and played Secret Agent Man. I've never seen a band defeat the house music before. Amazing. Below is a clip of Be Stiff some dude shot from the show last night.

So, expect a decent amount of Devo posts this week...

There is something magical about seeing a band you truly love up close and personal. I'm not talking that shit local band all ones friends play in - but the big boys that years later you never thought you'd get to see.

Seeing Madness and then Joe Strummer play at the 9:30 Club are some of my fondest memories of music and friends.

YUM.

I'll leave the "magical music dreams" discussion alone and offer this...

Seeing a band make the roadies put their shit back together and turn the house music off is something I have never seen.

Well done DEVO!

The one dude was resetting the kick drum mic while Freese was playing. Take that house music.

Oh shit, yo, I've got a Full House of magical music dreams that came alive.

I mean shit, who foresaw all those extremely old Jamaican acts coming back out of retirement in the early and mid nineties to play for a bunch of hyped-up white kids in D.C?

Seeing Toots and the Maytals bust shit up at the Taste of D.C. in 1996 was sick shit.

I think I saw every major 1960's Jamaican act except Jimmy Cliff - who I missed by one day when I saw he had played at a church in Baltimore on Sunday. Wasn't advertised anywhere :(

There's maybe a handful of Oi! bands that I never got to see (Cocksparrer, Cockney Rejects, Blitz), but otherwise I think saw every band in my music collection at a local club (heck, got to go record shopping the next day with most of Op Ivy when they came back together as Rancid their first year).

I was lucky to get into the music I liked at the right time. Very lucky.

Oi. I got to eat a hamburger with Rancid after they finished recording their latest ablum. They seemed like nice blokes. I'm sorry I missed Devo. Their show looks rad.

Despite your impressive list of music hip-happenin's Mr. GoGo, Anonymous/Kyle wins. Hamburgers are funny.

Only if it had bacon on it. Then I will concede victory.

Otherwise, BOLLOCKS!
